About Me

Brian has been working as a designer, developer and function-tester for z/VM since June 2000. In one capacity or another, he has been involved in every major functional area of z/VM. His passion, though, is security, and he inherited the role of z/VM Security Development Lead in September 2010.

In his current role, he oversees the entire z/VM security lifecycle, from certifications and secure design, to secure coding techniques and pen-testing, to vulnerability analysis and secure (and safe) service application.

Since the primary threat to security is education, he also spends a lot of time doing presentations and writing papers in order to spread the good word about security. He's served as the IBM Lab representative to user groups like MVMUA, WAVV, and the VM Workshop in recent years as well.

Once in a blue moon, when no one's looking, he even writes code.

Prior to joining IBM full-time, he worked in IBM Global Services as a website developer and webmaster.

Brian graduated from Lafayette College in May of 2000 with a Bachelor's degree in both Computer Science and English.

Fun facts:

  1. Brian has been a CISSP since December 2009. (Which is only impressive when you realize he did it without a bootcamp or employer support.)
  2. Brian's hobbies include writing, reading, distance running yoga, amateur mixology, and crafting unspeakably unfunny puns.
  3. Brian was an NCAA Division I Varsity Fencer. (Not a good one, though.)
  4. Brian is a two-time winner of the z/VM chili-making contest. He credits the flame-roasted peppers.
  5. Brian was one of the lead singers of the z/VM band, when the band was operational. In true-to-form "Behind the Music" style, the band ultimately had a merge conflict.
  6. In 2017, Brian was knighted by the VM user community, which was simultaneously thrilling and humbling. (He did have the hammer before the title, though.)
