The MONWRITE Offer

At the 2008 z/VM and Linux for System z T3, I gave a short presentation on using MONWRITE to collect CP Monitor data.

During the presentation, I encouraged the audience to become familiar with the MONWRITE practices, techniques, and procedures I described, including:

  • Learning to use MONWRITE to collect data, and
  • Building a library of routinely collected data, and
  • Packaging MONWRITE data using VMARC, and
  • Using FTP to transmit MONWRITE data to IBM.

Mastering these steps is a vital part of preparing oneself eventually to be involved in a PMR.

To foster such mastery, I offered that I would look at MONWRITE data customers send me, subject to some limitations. The offer is described below.

Procedure

Using the techniques described in the presentation,

  1. Collect only 30 minutes of MONWRITE data, having started CP Monitor with these settings: CP MONITOR SAMPLE ENABLE ALL CP MONITOR SAMPLE INTERVAL 1 MIN CP MONITOR SAMPLE RATE 5 SEC CP MONITOR EVENT ENABLE ALL CP MONITOR EVENT DISABLE SEEKS ALL CP MONITOR EVENT DISABLE SCHEDULER ALL

  2. Open a support case and upload the data through the case. Post into the case that the data is not an actual problem but rather is for me.

What I Will Do

As time permits I will retrieve your data, run it through PERFKIT BATCH, and send you the resultant Perfkit listing.

Limitations

  1. The purpose of this offer is to give you an opportunity to learn and practice the MONWRITE techniques I described in the presentation.

  2. I will not use this channel or offer to provide diagnostic or consulting services that might conflict with fee-based services offered by IBM or third parties.

  3. In return for sending me MONWRITE data, you will receive only a Perfkit listing. No other diagnosis or counsel will be provided.

  4. I will do this for you only once, for only one MONWRITE file.

  5. IBM and I reserve the right to withdraw this offer at any time.

Have Fun!

Good luck and start practicing with MONWRITE!
