SPOOL Subsystem of VM

The SPOOL subsystem of VM includes responsibility for the following parts of the system:

  • Real unit record device support (printers, readers, punch)
  • Simulation of virtual unit record devices
  • SPOOL file initialization and shutdown
  • SPOOL file back-up (SPTAPE and SPXTAPE)
  • SPOOL commands such as the class D SPOOL operator commands and the class G file and SPOOL device manipulation commands (e.g. SPOOL, ORDER, TRANSFER, PURGE, CHANGE, QUERY).
  • Diagnose x'14', x'B4', x'B8', x'BC', x'D8', x'F8'and x'290'.
  • *SPL system services
  • Cross System Extensions (CSE) Shared SPOOL

In case you didn't know it and are interested, SPOOL is an acronym and it stands for Simultaneous Peripheral Operations OnLine.
