VM/ESA Version 2.1 DCE Feature * Generally Available (Feb. 23, 1996)

VM/ESA* Version 2 was made generally available on October 27, 1995 providing portability of applications and data with VM support of selected POSIX** standards. Customer acceptance of this new version has been occurring at a record pace, as is evidenced by the number of migrations to date from previous levels of VM.

VM/ESA Version 2 support for OpenExtensions* is enhanced even more with the general availability of the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE)*** feature to more fully exploit open distributed client/server computing for VM/ESA customers. VM applications can now interoperate with other DCE-compliant systems in a DCE cell using the VM DCE services. Support consists of the following:

  • Client support for the DCE Cell Directory Server providing more transparent access to applications and data

  • Client support for the DCE Security Server permitting a set of common security services across different systems and applications

  • Support for Remote Procedure Call (RPC) allowing development of client/server applications without the programmer needing to get hung up in communications details

  • Support for DCE Threads easing the portability of DCE-compliant applications
In addition, support for the privacy of user data using RPC is also available with the DCE User Data Privacy Feature. Availability of this feature varies by country.

Both DCE features were available at no cost to VM/ESA Version 2 customers. Further information was made available in announcement letter 295-240, dated June 12, 1995.
