OpenExtensions for z/VM

Exchangeability of CMS data and file-system data

With OpenExtensions for z/VM, workstation users can copy data from CMS minidisks or SFS directories into byte files for use at the host or, through Network File System server support, at the workstation. Users can also upload ASCII-encoded files to the host, where they can be translated into EBCDIC encoding for the host. These files can be stored or processed either as byte files or copied to a CMS minidisk or SFS directory.

The same application program can access both traditional CMS files and the byte files within the BFS. In addition to the C language interface, a callable service interface is provided for invocation from Assembler H applications and subroutines.

Security for byte files is provided through z/VM interfaces used by RACF or any equivalent security product.
