z/VM Virtual Networking Hints and Tips - Error x0002, xE005, xE00A

  • HCPSWU2833E Error 'E00A'X adding IP address for VSWITCH SYSTEM name

Further changes in LINUX kernal processing may produce this error for a different scenario for z/VM 5.2.0 systems. That problem is being addressed by APAR VM64162.

  • DTCOSD223E OSD device DEVOSD1A: Return code E00A from SETIP for IPv4

    z/VM 5.1.0 or z/VM 5.2.0 z/VM TCP/IP Stack error.

  • HCPSWU2833E Error '0002'X adding IP address for VSWITCH SYSTEM name
HCPSWU2833E Error 'E005'X adding IP address for VSWITCH SYSTEM name
HCPSWU2833E Error 'E00A'X adding IP address for VSWITCH SYSTEM name

Depending on timing, one of these error messages may appear when the LINUX kernel level changes and a guest interface is coupled to an IP VSWITCH on z/VM 5.1.0 systems. A change in the way the 2.6 kernel initializes means duplicate ARP requests are being forwarded to the OSA-Express. These requests overlap, resulting in the error messages shown.

Guests coupled to an IP VSWITCH should be configured with ARP='no'.

z/VM V5 R2.0 has been enhanced to force sequencing of these requests, avoiding the problem even when the interface is configured to send ARP broadcasts.

See Linux QDIO Setup for more information on configuring a LINUX QDIO interface.
