OpenExtensions for z/VM
Use OpenExtensions services for access to high-speed tape devices
In z/VM, your UNIX applications can access large databases from high-speed System/390 tape devices. Although tape data must be in the form of CMS data files, UNIX applications running in the OpenExtensions for z/VM environment can use the ANSI standard C functions of fopen(), fread(), and fwrite() to access the data.
Suitable applications include, for example, seismic and weather information analysis, demographic information analysis and prediction, and data-intensive financial analysis. An application currently in use at a workstation might be a candidate for porting to z/VM.
In z/VM, data stored on media in UNIX formats can be exchanged between z/VM and other conforming systems using the pax, tar, and cpio utilities.
