z/VM Spotlight Videos

Recently released New Function APARs for z/VM are briefly explained in form of short 2-5 minute videos. The purpose is to provide a brief overview of why the function is important, and why someone would want to install it on their z/VM system.

August 10, 2023 - z/VM Performance Data Pump
The z/VM Performance Data Pump extends Performance Toolkit with the ability to extract real-time performance data and send that to enterprise observability products for visualization and analysis, leveraging the customer processes for alerting and reporting. The Data Pump includes support for Splunk. For customers who can use open source, a solution is demonstrated using InfluxDB and Grafana. Sample dashboards for Grafana will be provided. The IBM Z Container Registry offers container images for use with Linux on z/VM.

February 21, 2020 - Dynamic Crypto
z/VM Dynamic Crypto allows you to add or remove Crypto Express adapters without shutting down z/VM or the second-level guest. This new z/VM function strengthens the high availability of the IBM Z and LinuxONE platforms.

September 12, 2019 - 80 Logical Processors
80 Logical Processor Support allows a z/VM 7.1 system to increase the maximum logical processors from 64 to 80. This will allow customers to run more workload with more processors on each LPA, and possibly manager a fewer number of LPARs for the same amount of workload.

July 26, 2019 - Extended Address Volumes (EAV) Paging
EAV Paging Support allows a z/VM 7.1 system to page to EAV devices, increasing the amount of paging storage supported and/or reducing the number of volumes to achieve a given amount of paging space.

June 3, 2019 - VSwitch Priority Queueing
Currently all VSwitch outbound traffic to the external network is transmitted at the same priority. When VSwitch Priority Queuing is enabled, z/VM will establish multiple OSA QDIO Output queues, and transmit data to the external network at different priorities.
