Service and feature packs released for the z/VM 7.4 CMS component


z/VM 7.4 introduced linear service to the product. Service fixpacks and feature packs are now released on a regular cadence. By installing the latest pack you will receive all service fixes and features for the component. Refer to the change log table below for a comprehensive list of changes to the component since the z/VM 7.4 General Availability date.

  • z/CMS was preventing use of CP Diagnose X'214', Pending Page Release
    This caused memory initialization to be performed by CMS rather than deferred to CP, which resulted in a loop issuing a Set Storage Key instruction for each page of allocated memory. While Diagnose x'214' is not supported for memory above 2GB in a z/Architecture virtual machine, it is supported for memory below 2GB and provides a significant performance improvement. z/CMS has been changed to enable Pending Page Release and use it for memory below 2GB.
     
  • DMSSJGDD $EXEC has been updated such that retry logic has been added with some delay
    The code links and accesses the DIRMAINT 1DF disk until the EXTENT CONTROL file can be successfully read or the maximum five tries is exhausted.
     
  • Fix for SMAPI Virtual_Network_Vswitch_Query_Extended API
    The error is in DMSSSVQE and requires a one line change to a REXX parse instruction.

  • Diff and Patch Utilities
    Unified Diff and Patch for CMS is an implementation of the unified diff format via two CMS utilities. The UDIFF utility generates a diff file from two input files, while the UPATCH utility applies the changes from an input patch file to an input source file. Diff files can be distributed and applied to other copies of the original source file to apply these changes, much like the CMS/XEDIT update facility.
     
  • SMAPI Support for Query Linear Service
    SMAPI Support for Query Linear Service provides enhancements to the SMAPI System_Service_Query API to support querying the LEVELS information that is provided in VMSES Feature Pack 01 (VM66840).
     
  • DirMaint and SMAPI LOADDEV Alternate Support
    DirMaint and SMAPI LOADDEV Alternate Support provides enhancements to SMAPI in order to support elements of Secure IPL.

  • z/CMS unnecessarily prevents all use of Diagnose x'214'
    The change simply deletes two instructions that surround the Diagnose x'214' verification code during storage initialization.
  • GetShopz exits with no messages in certain environments
    GetShopz occasionally identified 1024 as an available port and attempted to use it. If the port was unavailable, GetShopz would exit with no messages. This fix now tried to connect to a different port, and if successful, saves it in GLOBALV. If unsuccessful, then an error message is displayed and DEBUG PORT provides more helpful output.
  • GetShopz may corrupt unknown files being transferred
    Changes were made to how GetShopz handles TERSED files with various compression algorithms and fixes a bug that was causing record duplication.

  • GetShopz ServiceLink Support
    Provide support in GetShopz for direct to host transfer of service packages from IBM ServiceLink. GetShopz currently has the function to securely transfer z/VM service packages directly from Shopz. This new function APAR will provide the same ability for orders from ServiceLink.

  • Correct PIPGFTXT building a filter package that contains parts with long lines.
    The default for PIPGFTXT is to compress the REXX programs that are included in the filter package. This may result in long source lines. The code in PIPGFTXT has been fixed to correctly compute the length of long lines as well. This ensures a working filter package is created.
