TCP/IP V2R4 - Installation Requirements for RSU 0001
Audience:
ALL customers using TCP/IP Version 2 Release 4 (V2R4)
The information that follows is provided to assist you in installing the 0001 RSU for TCP/IP Version 2 Release 4. This RSU includes several IBM Network Station Server Support PTFs that require changes to be made to your system before this RSU can be installed. These changes include:
- defining additional user IDs and minidisks
- updating existing user ID and minidisk characteristics.
Note!
The changes cited below must be implemented before you attempt
to receive this RSU service and place it into production. A
complete list of these required changes is
also available.
Also, the resources and requirements that must be implemented on your system may vary, based on specific TCP/IP service (APARs and PTFs) that has already been applied.
Summary of TCP/IP-specific Requirements |
When you perform Step 7.2.2.1, Prepare to Receive Service, as documented in the TCP/IP V2R4 Program Directory, you must also perform the steps that follow; these additional steps should be completed before you begin Step 7.2.2.2, Receive the Service. For more detailed information about a resource addition or change identified here, select the link associated with that item.

Summary of VM/ESA-specific Requirements |
In addition to the VM TCP/IP-specific changes previously cited, you must also ensure that appropriate VM/ESA service has been applied to your system. Specific VM/ESA service requirements are listed below:
For VM/ESA Version 2 Release 2.0:
- VM61080 (Initial PTF: UM28331)
This APAR is included as part of VM/ESA 2.1.0 9802RSU (and later RSU levels) - VM61480 (Initial PTF: UM28657)
This APAR is included as part of VM/ESA 2.2.0 9804RSU (and later RSU levels)
To verify whether the DMSPSLU TXTLIB provided by APAR PQ61080 is already available on your system, issue the following command while logged on to the P735FALK user ID:
global txtlib dmspslu
Rationale for RSU Inclusion of Network Station Support |
As many customers using TCP/IP V2R4 are aware, until the 0001 RSU was created, the most recent V2R4 RSU was the 9801 level. No interceding RSU has been available due to the potential impact now being imposed by this latest RSU. Some background on why these additional steps and resources are now being required follows.
To accommodate varying requirements, it was necessary for VM TCP/IP support for the IBM Network Station to be introduced via several APARs, the most prominent of which is (PQ01770). This support was "packaged" with substantial consideration given to how to best minimize the introduction of this service to only that customer set for which this support was requested or required.
At a later time, the need to address mail "spamming" problems arose. In order to provide a timely solution to these problems, it was again necessary to introduce this support via the service stream. However, due to the manner in which the TCP/IP for VM V2R4 had been initially packaged, it was necessary to update a VMSES/E build list (the TCPBL491 EXEC) that had been previously updated for PQ01770. Thus, nearly all IBM Network Station support maintenance became a prerequisite for these SMTP enhancements.
In order to minimize the impact of this prerequisite "chaining", as well as the the need to create additional user IDs and minidisks that would not be necessary for all customer environments, the TCP/IP service team has deferred the creation of a more current RSU on several occasions.
At this time however, given the number of PTFs available for various VM TCP/IP V2R4 components, we believe the preventive benefit of applying appropriate service (via an RSU) sufficiently outweighs the preparation effort necessary to accommodate installation of an RSU that includes the Network Station support maintenance. Thus, the 0001 RSU has been created, and includes this maintenance.
Note!
The IBM Network Station Client Code PTFs are not included on
the 0001 RSU.
