Performance Management

These changes in z/VM 7.1 affect the performance management of z/VM:

  • Monitor Changes
  • Command or Output Changes
  • Effects on Accounting Data
  • Performance Toolkit for VM Changes
  • Omegamon XE Changes

Monitor Changes

Several z/VM 7.1 enhancements affect CP monitor data. The changes are described below. The detailed monitor record layouts are found on the control blocks page.

Foundational support is provided for a future z/VM deliverable that will increase the number of supported logical processors beyond the current limit of 64. This will let clients run z/VM in SMT mode in an LPAR having more than 32 cores.

Support for dedicating processors to guests is disabled.

The following monitor records have been updated for this support:

Monitor Record Record Name
Domain 0 Record 10 Scheduler Activity (Global)
Domain 0 Record 23 Formal Spin Lock

Domain 1 Record 5 Processor Configuration

Domain 5 Record 3 Processor Data (Per Processor)
Domain 5 Record 15 Dispatch Vector Assignments
Domain 5 Record 16 Park/Unpark Decision
Domain 5 Record 17 Real CPU Data (Per CPU)
Domain 5 Record 18 Dispatch Vector High Frequency Data

To provide additional debug information for system and performance problems, z/VM 7.1 added or changed some monitor records.

The following monitor records have been updated for this support:

Monitor Record Record Name
Domain 6 Record 3 Device Activity
Domain 6 Record 49 EDEVICE CHPID Acivity

Command or Output Changes

This section cites new or changed commands or command outputs that are relevant to the task of performance management. It is not an inventory of every new or changed command.

The section does not give syntax diagrams, sample command outputs, or the like. Current copies of z/VM publications can be found in the online library.

Related to EAV Minidisks
  • ATTACH lets TEMP, PARM, and PERM be anywhere on an EAV. PARM space is limited to 65520 cylinders.
  • CPACCESS can access a PARM disk only if its size is less than or equal to 65520 cylinders.
  • DEFINE MDISK can access a PARM disk only if its size is less than or equal to 65520 cylinders.
  • QUERY VIRTUAL DASD can now display a seven-digit cylinder number.
Related to Crypto
  • QUERY CRYPTO and QUERY VIRTUAL CRYPTO have new responses corresponding to z14 crypto facilities.
Related to Encrypted Paging
  • SET ENCRYPT and QUERY ENCRYPT are new commands.
Related to SSL CRYPTO APVIRT
  • QUERY CRYPTO DOMAINS USERS might now show the SSL servers as using CRYPTO APVIRT.
Related to Dumps
  • SNAPDUMP and SET DUMP now support PGMBKS and FRMTBL operands.
  • QUERY DUMP will now show the PGMBKS and FRMTBL operands.
Related to HiperDispatch
  • SET SRM has a new operand, UNPARKING, to select which unparking model to use.
  • QUERY SRM shows which unparking model is in effect.
Related to Resource Pools
  • DEFINE RESPOOL replaces DEFINE CPUPOOL.
  • MONITOR EVENT introduces the notion of the synthetic COMMAND domain.
  • QUERY RESPOOL replaces QUERY CPUPOOL.
  • QUERY MONITOR displays the synthetic COMMAND domain.
  • SET RESPOOL replaces SET CPUPOOL.

Effects on Accounting Data

z/VM 7.1 did not change accounting.

Performance Toolkit for VM Changes

Performance Toolkit for VM has been enhanced since z/VM 6.4. For more information, visit the Perfkit pages.

Omegamon XE Changes

OMEGAMON XE now supports Ubuntu Server 16.04 LTS and later, as well as the latest releases of SLES and RHEL. In addition, there have been additional situations and thresholds added to the product, as well as being made fully compatible with z/VM 7.1.
