VM History and Heritage
This page is in response to the many who inquire about about VM history, VM heritage and traditions, and about the origins of IBM in Endicott NY.
IBM announced its first official VM product (then called VM/370) on August 2, 1972. As times changed, so did VM. You may have known it by one or more of its many flavors (VM/SP, VM/XA, VM/SP HPO, VM/IS, VM/ESA) that preceded today's z/VM.
