z/VM Virtual Switch Controllers

In almost all cases we recommend that you define your virtual switch using "CONTROLLER *" (the default) and simply use the two pre-configured VSWITCH controllers provided. Note 1

A controller does the work to initialize and terminate a VSWITCH OSA-E connection and is not involved in the data transfer work, which is handled by the Control Program (CP).

You may want to have extra controllers if you are in a test environment, or are using TRACE OSD or MORETRACE OSD to debug a problem. For example, you may want to isolate messages for a specific virtual switch

Virtual switch timeout (stall) checking should be disabled. when using the OSD trace. That is done by specifying the FAILOVER_DISABLED option on the VSWITCH CONTROLLER statement in the controller's TCP/IP configuration file. All other failover processing remains unchanged.

Note 1 Pre-configured controllers DTCVSW1 and DTCVSW2 are provided starting with z/VM Release 5, Version 2.0.
