IBM z/VM 6.4 Cloud Manager Appliance (OpenStack Newton)

IBM z/VM 6.4 Cloud Manager Appliance (OpenStack Newton) provides an easy method to deploy the following systems management functions on z/VM:

IBM z/VM 6.4 Cloud Manager Appliance (OpenStack Newton) blog

Installation and Service Information

The table below lists z/VM 6.4.0 APARs and PTFs for z/VM OpenStack Newton support, sorted by PTF date. Order all PTFs with pre-requisites. The service files below also include SMAPI and other related components' service PTF numbers.

The CMA has been stabilized at the Newton release of OpenStack and is only available on z/VM 6.4. Client reported problems and security updates will only be provided on CMA Newton on z/VM 6.4.

You can check which service in the table below is missing on your system by either of two ways:

  1. If you have applied APAR VM65954 you can upload CMA SERVICE and then issue this command:
    CONFIGUR SERVICE
  2. Upload NEWTON64 SERVICE and then issue this command:
SERVICE ALL STATUS LIST NEWTON64 SERVICE

Read the information file (CMA140 FILE) on the MAINT640 400 disk for installation instructions beyond PUT2PROD.

Follow this procedure if you are installing a new z/VM system.

How to determine your current CMA version level

If you are running the CMA appliance as a controller node:

  1. Log into the xCAT user interface
  2. Go to Nodes/Nodes and click xcat
  3. Select Actions/Run script
  4. In the script box enter:
    cat '/opt/ibm/cmo/version'
    cat '/opt/xcat/version'
    cat '/opt/zhcp/version'
  5. Press run
  6. In the yellow information box will be displayed the version and build date for CMA
  7. Example output:
CMO Appliance Version: 1.2.0-20160315 Built on: Tue Mar 15 22:24:47 EDT 2016
xCAT version: 2.8.3.9 Built on: Thu Feb 18 03:45:19 EST 2016
zhcp version: 2.8.3.9 Built on: Thu Feb 18 03:45:19 EST 2016

If you are running CMA as a compute node you can find the xCAT and zhcp code levels by sshing into the xCAT MN IP and issue the following commands:

  • cat '/opt/ibm/cmo/version'
  • cat '/opt/xcat/version'
  • cat '/opt/zhcp/version'
  • Example output:
CMO Appliance Version: 1.2.0-20160315 Built on: Tue Mar 15 22:24:47 EDT 2016
xCAT version: 2.8.3.9 Built on: Thu Feb 18 03:45:19 EST 2016
zhcp version: 2.8.3.9 Built on: Thu Feb 18 03:45:19 EST 2016

CMA service process

CMA will automatically install all VMSES/E-applied APARs when CMA is restarted:

  • Download the APAR(s), apply them, and follow any instructions in the APAR text and in CMA140 FILE on the MAINT640 400 disk.
  • Force and then xautolog VSMGUARD to restart CMA
  • When it starts. CMA will find the newly installed APAR(s) on the MAINT 400 disk and install them into the appliance. It will send a progress message to the XCAT_notify userid before and after installing each APAR it finds.
  • If CMA must be restarted after installing APARs, it will send a notification message to the XCAT_notify userid that a reboot is needed to put one or more fixes online and then
  • CMA will restart itself automatically.

smcli interface to SMAPI open source code

The zThin code contains a component called smcli, a Linux command line interface to many SMAPI API's. This code is available in the zthin-parts directory on python-zvm-sdk GitHub.

The build scripts are in the buildzthin* files on build-zvmsdk GitHub.

Code reviews are currently done in GerritHub.

To see the API's and API syntax for a command:

  • "smcli -h" will show which API's are supported
  • "smcli apiname -h" will show the command syntax

If you are interested in a smcli only executable rather than an RPM, instructions are Here.
