itWorld Canada IT World Canada Events - The Linux-Powered Cloud

Economic forces are putting pressure on CIOs and enterprise IT managers to reduce the complexity and cost of the technology within their data centres. Cloud computing has become the most talked-about solution to these problems, but not without the right approach and the right platform. This is where Linux comes in.

Join IT World Canada Editor-in-Chief Shane Schick for a ComputerWorld Interactive breakfast event which will outline a business case for Linux as an enabler for emerging workloads. While Linux often entered the enterprise as a skunworks project running Web servers or test and development environments, the platform has matured over the last 10 years to run the most mission-critical pieces of major organizations.

Jim Elliott, Linux Champion at IBM Canada Ltd., will provide a detailed look at why Linux is the right choice to:

  • Consolidate physical infrastructure to prepare for cloud computing
  • Deliver business-critical workloads at lower costs
  • Reduce costs on energy infrastructure, staffing and licensing
  • Set up a utility computing environment that adds value to the business

You will also hear from a customer speaker who will provide real-world feedback on Linux as a choice for private clouds

Come learn the best practices around Linux that will position your data centre for the future of cloud computing.

NaSPA Linux on System z - A Strategic View. (2.12MB)
A Strategic View Datacenters today have a key architectural choice to make in designing large-scale implementations. Is the best approach to scale-out with rack-optimized servers or to scale up with large SMP servers using virtualization facilities to run many images on a single server? IBM System z is a 'green' solution which for many users will be the optimal choice. Since Linux on S/390 (now Linux on System z) became available early in 2000 customers around the world have increasingly exploited this technology in conjunction with PR/SM LPAR and z/VM. From environments with only a single IFL Linux engine) to those with 100s of IFLs, the ways in which datacenters exploit Linux on System z vary widely. Jim will describe how Linux on System z, in combination with z/VM, will provide a robust and cost-effective Linux environment which integrates well with z/OS as well providing for consolidation of distributed platforms.

Given at the NaSPA Ontario meeting in Toronto on May 20, 2009.

This presentation was updated on April 10, 2009 to enhance the chronology of S/360 and S/370 machines.

This presentation was updated on November 11, 2009 to make some minor corrections.

SHARE CSE For High Availability and System Management. Do you have more than one z/VM system? Do you want to be able to share the RACF database across your systems? Do you want to only manage one VM Directory for all the systems? Would you like to ensure that a minidisk may only be linked RW on one guest on one system, and have all the systems enforce that, and thus be able to finally get a good night's sleep? The z/VM Cross System Extensions can do all that for you, and more! Come and see how z/VM's CSE enables you to treat separate VM systems as a single system image. Lower your system management workload, and get higher availability to boot! (234KB)
