On September 30, IBM delivered z/OS 1.13 with significant enhancements in batch processing as well as a wide selection of other enhancements. On October 12, IBM announced z/VM 6.2 with support for clustering and live guest relocation and a large number of other enhancements. Also announced on October 12 was z/VSE 5.1 with support for 64-bit applications. This presentation will cover all these announcements.

Presented at the Central Ontario users Group in Toronto, ON on December 1, 2011.

IBM Take Back Control of IT with z/VM and Linux on System z (906KB).
Linux has been available on System z for over 11 years now. Customers around the world have found they can lower the cost of operations while improving operational efficiency using z/VM and Linux on System z. Come to this session to learn how you can benefit from these innovative technologies in your environment. We will provide an overview of the technology and describe how customers are making use of it for business advantage.

Oracle Workloads on Linux on System z (398KB).
Oracle Database workloads work very effectively on the only machine that is capable of running more than 10 different types of commercial database engines, supported at the same time. System z is the machine that has database workloads built into it's DNA. Learn as well the trends and directions that Oracle has taken in adding to the portfolio on System z such as WebLogic, Tuxedo and eBusiness Suite. We will talk about database and application support of Oracle databases as well as performance.

Presented at the System z Technical University in Miami Beach, FL in October 2011.

CA Technologies

Big Iron: The Mainframe Story is the long-awaited chronicle of the most innovative and enduring computer technology the world has yet known.

CA Mainframe Chorus and IBM Systems Magazine co-present the documentary film that chronicles the mainframe's origins and storied history and glimpses its bright future. Each chronological segment features events, photos, video, and factoids from Stonehenge and Alan Turing to System/360 and virtualization to z10 and beyond, including conversations and reflections from experts, historians and the people who made (and make), the innovation happen.

Take a walk with us through the Mainframe's past and future.

IBM and Red Hat Executive Breakfast Why now is the time to migrate from Sun, SPARC and Solaris to Red Hat Enterprise Linux on IBM Systems. (858KB)

Migrate to the Future: Mitigate risks and reduce costs with IBM and Red Hat presented by Martin Long, Senior Technical Solution Manager, IBM Migration Factory and Alex Heublein, Director, Strategy and Solutions, Red Hat Consulting. (1.10MB)

SHARE A Strategic View of Linux on System z from IBM. In the 11 years since Linux became available on mainframes, customers around the world have found novel ways to exploit this technology. From sites with a single IFL running just a few Linux images to sites with 100s of IFLs running 1000s of Linux images, the variety of implementations is dramatic. The early use was primarily edge of network where today usage is for mission-critical applications including SAP, IBM DB2 and Oracle DB, IBM WebSphere and Oracle Application Server, IBM Cognos, SGHE Banner and 100s of other applications. Users today have to decide on where to approach datacenter design as scale-out with rack-optimized servers, to scale up with large SMP servers, or a combination of the two using large SMP servers and virtualization to run many images on a single server. Jim will describe how Linux on System z, combination with z/VM, provides a robust and cost-effective Linux environment which integrates well with z/OS and z/VSE as well providing for consolidation of distributed platforms. Given at the SHARE Winter 2011 conference in Anaheim, CA in March, 2010.

10 Years of Enterprise Linux on System z. Ten years ago, in January 2000, an amazing thing happened. No, not Y2K. A penguin met a bear and they became fast friends. For, that was the month that the first full Linux image was released that would run on a mainframe. The story since then has been nothing short of amazing. Because, not only did Linux work well running on a mainframe, it worked really, really well. And, you could have lots and lots of them. So, while the penguins multiplied, the "bear", z/VM, also became more and more in demand. As it turned out, bears are really good at carrying lots and lots of penguins around. Now, a decade later, the partnership of Linux, z/VM and the System z is stronger than ever. (669KB)

Given at the SHARE Summer 2010 conference in Boston, MA in August, 2010.

CSE For High Availability and System Management. Do you have more than one z/VM system? Do you want to be able to share the RACF database across your systems? Do you want to only manage one VM Directory for all the systems? Would you like to ensure that a minidisk may only be linked RW on one guest on one system, and have all the systems enforce that, and thus be able to finally get a good night's sleep? The z/VM Cross System Extensions can do all that for you, and more! Come and see how z/VM's CSE enables you to treat separate VM systems as a single system image. Lower your system management workload, and get higher availability to boot! (234KB)

Given at the SHARE Winter 2009 conference in Austin, TX in March, 2009.

An Introduction to Linux and Open Source. Linux and Open Source continue to see substantial growth around the world. This session will provide on overview of Open Source and an introduction to Linux (including concepts and terminology). Jim will also provide an overview of Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) 10 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5. (1.81MB)
